I have wondered if it's always been about the ones who didn't come home and fought for us. I know it started that way, but when i was a girl, it was about the family going to the cemetery with flowers for the graves and to clean up around the headstones when required. Did we just do it differently in the PNW or was it always supposed to be about soldiers? It's interesting how mores change with time.
I have friends in N Calif that spend Memorial day at the cemetery, taking flowers and cleaning family graves. They have done it for years. No one in our family does that, we take care of the family graves all year long. Memorial day we hold sacred for the memory of military members who have given all.
