It's Throw Back Thursday TBT
While digging through a box of old family photos, I came across this gem.
If memory serves, this was during a period when mom had decided to try her hand at sewing. Gingham was obviously Big that year. Don't remember that she did much sewing after this project. She did make sure I knew how to sew, by sending me to a terrific sewing leader in 4-H, so that I could make my own clothes. I have been sewing ever since, but I never ever made matching outfits...
That's me, sport'n the buck teeth and the high water bangs...
It's a family treasure!

Great picture.Did your mum cut your bangs? We call them fringes and my mother cut mine even though she was a far better seamstress than ahairdresser.

DeleteThanks. Yes she cut my bangs, and then moved on to perms. I remember those terrible things... and her saying, "hmmm, the ends are a little over processed (burnt to a horrible orange crisp), I'll just trim them off."
Wow, I used to do that with the kids clothes and mine but not his ;)

Beautiful family. Love all the homemade clothes and haircuts. My mother cut my hair until I was 10 then she let me go to the barber shop. LOL

DeleteI love it!! My mom only ever got my younger sisters matching outfits because they were so close in age. I don't think she has sewed anything, ever!

We never had matching outfits in the family, per se, although mom was quite a seamstress, and took delight in providing matching outfits for me and my dolls.
ReplyDeleteYou still can see couples wearing matching outfits down here -- usually, where there are polka parties and square dances taking place. Also, cloggers. I confess a certain fondness for matching western shirts, especially if they have pearl snaps.

DeleteI inadvertently bought the Cowman a shirt with pearl snaps, once, he was not happy, "only outsiders & dudes wear those things".
His dad & grandfather had their shirts made in SanFrancisco and there was never a pearl snap in sight. So I'm sure that's where the no snaps came into play.
I remember how popular matching outfits were. My Mom liked to dress my sister and I alike. Oh, and the home perms! We felt like we looked like tennis balls after one!

In Hawaii they call that matching-outfit thing "Aloha Wear" and Hilo Hatttie's sells a ton to visiting wedding parties!
