When I am old

When I Am An Old Horsewoman
I shall wear turquoise and diamonds,
And a straw hat that doesn’t suit me
And I shall spend my social security on
white wine and car
And sit in my alleyway of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.

I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night
And ride the old bay gelding,
Across the moonstruck meadow
If my old bones will allow
And when people come to call, I will smile and nod
As I walk past the gardens to the barn
and show instead the flowers growing
inside stalls fresh-lined with straw.

I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair
as if it were a jewel
And I will be an embarrassment to ALL
Who will not yet have found the peace in being free
to have a horse as a best friend
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am old.

  1. I love that and wish I also had a barn and horse waiting. I sure miss Jesse, his soft nicker and the smell of leather.

  2. ARKANSAS PATTI: When I get my barn & horses you will be most welcome to come and enjoy. Miss my horses, and meadows, and a pasal of dogs. Go to a saddle makers shop and pickup a few leather scraps to carry with you. Or you can do like the crazy granny and get a leather pouch, fill it with a pinch of timothy hay, and a worry stone.

  3. May we all grow up to be Old Horsewomen Brighid.

  4. SIX: Yep, Never giving up on the dream or the memory.

  5. This portion is my true life goal: "I will........
    wear hay in my hair
as if it were a jewel
And I will be an embarrassment to ALL..."

    Thank you for sharing this.

  6. Great one, and I'm sure you WILL get there... :-)

  7. "I shall wear turquoise and diamonds"

Don't lament when the necklace breaks when you're out busting brush looking for a missing calf...

  8. GRANNIE ANNIE: You are most welcome... we will know each other by the straw in our hair.

OLD NFO: Thanks, I sure hope so!

LL: LOL, you have reminded me of The diamond story.

  9. That is you to a tee. Enjoy!

  10. GRANNYMAR: Except for the jewelry. Thanks.

  11. Yup, This was my plan but my best friend died. Its been a long and sad 2 years but I'm finally training up a new friend.

I have only one complaint about horses... They don't live long enough.
